In this week’s Friday Fling snippet, Darien is escorting Lyla to her downed ship. They’ve had a tiff, largely over his tendency to keep secrets, and Lyla knows there’s more that he isn’t telling her.
“Come on, then,” Darien said, tone harsh, and walked off.
I watched him go for a moment, noting the shotgun slung over one shoulder, his other hand loose and swinging, but I wasn’t fooled by the casual display. His steps were heavy, as if he was annoyed. Or possibly feeling guilty. I knew he was keeping things from me, and he was more than likely aware that I knew.
Yet he wasn’t wallowing so much that he ignored our surroundings — his head moved as he scanned the rolling GROUND with more intent than I thought necessary. Surely, with it being light and Phase only happening at night, we were safe? Or was my assumption about the timing wrong? Darien hadn’t said much about the phenomenon. I thought that meant he either didn’t know or hadn’t cared to share. Back to him keeping things from me. I sighed hard.
